How to Choose Outdoor Bar Stools

Start with the height, because it's the one measurement that makes or breaks a bar stool. Measure from the floor to the underside of your table or counter, then subtract about 10 to 12 inches for legroom. That lands you on a seat height: counter height runs around 24 to 27 inches for surfaces 35 to 39 inches tall, and bar height runs around 28 to 31 inches for surfaces 40 to 43 inches tall. Get this right and the rest is preference.

Material decides how much you think about the stool after you buy it. Cast aluminum and powder-coated steel shrug off rain and never rust, so they ask for nothing. Acacia and eucalyptus are real wood with real warmth, and they take a yearly coat of exterior oil to hold their color, or you let them silver to gray. All-weather PE wicker and woven rope hold up outdoors with almost no care, and the cushions are the part to keep dry. HDPE is the no-maintenance option that wipes clean and never fades.

Then think about how you'll actually use them. A backless stool tucks fully under the counter and disappears when you're done, which is why folding stools are the easy answer for guest seating you only need a few times a summer. A stool with a high back, armrests, and a footrest is the one you settle into for a long dinner. And if you're starting from nothing, a bar set gives you the table and the stools matched to each other, so the heights already line up.

One last thing worth checking is how the stools store. Folding stools collapse to a few inches and slide behind a door, while fixed stools with armrests take up their footprint year round, so measure your space before you order a set of four. If you want the cushions to last, bring them in over winter or use a cover, which does more for the life of a stool than anything else.

Outdoor Bar Stool FAQs

What seat height do I need for outdoor bar stools?

Measure from the floor to the underside of your table or counter, then subtract about 10 to 12 inches for legroom. Counter-height surfaces of 35 to 39 inches want a seat around 24 to 27 inches, and bar-height surfaces of 40 to 43 inches want a seat around 28 to 31 inches. Getting this right is the difference between sitting comfortably and reaching up or hunching over.
