Outdoor Conversation Sets

A conversation set is a coordinated group of outdoor seating arranged to face inward around a low central table, designed for talking and relaxing rather than dining. Seats sit lower and deeper than dining chairs, typically around 16 to 18 inches, with thick cushions intended for extended lounging. It functions as an outdoor equivalent of a living room seating group.

A conversation set uses separate pieces positioned facing one another, which makes conversation natural and allows you to rearrange the layout. A sectional connects into a continuous L or U shape, seats more people in the same footprint, and is best suited to a corner. Conversation sets generally suit open patios better, while sectionals make more efficient use of a defined corner.

It depends on the piece count. A five-piece set typically seats four comfortably, a seven-piece set seats five to seven, and a nine-piece configuration handles larger gatherings. Note that the piece count usually includes the table and any ottomans, so a five-piece set does not mean five seats.

For patios under roughly twelve by twelve feet, a five-piece set is the practical maximum. You need about three feet of clearance behind seating and 18 inches between seats and the table, and those requirements consume space quickly. On balconies and very compact courtyards, a four-piece or bistro arrangement usually works better than forcing a full conversation set into the space.

Quality outdoor cushions use water-resistant, fade-resistant fabric and quick-drying fill, which handles rain and sun far better than indoor upholstery. They are weather resistant rather than weatherproof. Cushions left saturated repeatedly will eventually develop mildew and lose loft, so covering them or bringing them indoors during extended wet weather significantly extends their life.

Aim for roughly 18 inches between seat fronts and the coffee table, close enough to reach a drink without standing. Keep opposing seats within about eight feet of each other so normal conversation carries. Behind seating, allow around three feet of clearance so people can pass without others having to move.
